Foreign Medical Graduates
US citizens and valid US Permanent Resident status holders who graduated from a foreign medical school must have and maintain a valid ECFMG certificate for entrance into a graduate medical training program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
Canadian citizens and eligible Canadian Immigrants who are NOT graduates of a foreign medical school must enter the US in non-immigrant visa status and maintain proper status throughout the length of the graduate medical training program. Possession of a valid I-94 card with the University of Kansas Medical Center School of Medicine as the sponsor is required. Canadian citizens and eligible Canadian Immigrants who are graduate of a foreign medical school who wish to enter a graduate medical training program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine must seek and maintain sponsorship through ECFMG for J-1 non-immigrant visa status.
All other international citizens who have graduated from any medical school, even US medical schools, who wish to pursue a program of training at the University of Kansas School of Medicine must be sponsored by the ECFMG for the J-1 non-immigrant visa classification and have and maintain a valid ECFMG certificate throughout the length of their training program.
Residents and Fellows who wish to change their immigration classification while pursing a graduate medical training program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine must seek prior written approval from the GME Office and the Executive Dean of the School of Medicine. Failure to seek such approval will subject the resident or fellow to immediate termination from his or her training program.
