International Rotations

All residents and fellows who are participating in an ACGME-Accredited training program at the University of Kansas Medical Center who want to participate in an international elective, must:

  • Notify Assistant Dean for GME at 8-0031 informing him that you are planning an international rotation at least two months in advance.
  • Submit the objectives of the planned rotation to the international preceptor and to the GME Office.
  • Submit the preceptor’s Curriculum Vitae to the GME Office as soon as possible.
  • Request the preceptor to write a letter to your Program Director approving this rotation. Letter should include your name, the name of the foreign institution, and the dates of rotation.
  • Contact the Nurse Manager for Employee Health to receive a list of immunizations required by the foreign country. Shots must be administered in the Employee Health at KUMC to ensure compliance.
  • Contact Payroll to ensure your stipend will be placed in a bank account that is accessible to you.
  • Check to see if your medical license will expire while you are on rotation in the foreign country.

Upon return, debrief the Program Director or another KUMC faculty member (clinician) concerning the international rotation. It is recommended that you complete a physical prior to returning to work at KU. This physical is not mandatory; however, if you visited a country during an outbreak of disease, returning to KUMC could place patients at risk. Your Program Director will determine whether you should take a physical before returning to work.
