Resident Stipends/Benefits
All residents in ACGME accredited programs must receive stipends and benefits as prescribed in the Resident Agreement and the Policies and Procedures governing Graduate Medical Education. The base stipend is determined yearly by the resident’s PGY level. Supplementary stipends may be paid to chief residents or fellows; however, these supplements are not to be paid with state funds and typically are derived from departmental clinical income. The Fiscal Year 2008 (July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2008) House Staff Stipends are as follows:

Benefits
- 3 weeks (15 work days) Vacation Leave, not to be accumulated from year to year
- 2 weeks (10 work days) Sick Leave, not to be accumulated from year to year
- 3 months Leave without Pay for reasons of family or personal illness, serious health condition, disability, or the birth or adoption of a child. All stipend payments and benefits will be suspended during a leave of absence. Any Leave without Pay time taken may extend the completion date of a residents/fellows training program. The length of extension, if required, will be equal to the total time absent from the program, excluding vacation and sick leave. If an extension is required, a resident/fellow will receive stipend payment and other benefits during this extension period.
- 12 working days per year of military leave with pay for active duty for training purposes
- Long-term disability insurance coverage
- Resident Meal Cards. All University of Kansas School of Medicine Residents and Fellows participating in an ACGME-Accredited training program will receive $16 for each day they are scheduled to be on 24-hour primary call or night float in the hospital. All monies are deposited onto a meal card, which is assigned to that individual for the duration of their training program. Residents and Fellows approved for meals, cannot receive more than 15 meals per month due to the ACGME regulations stating that residents cannot be on call more than every 3rd day. If a resident or fellow does not use his or her meal allowance within the given month, they will not be allowed to use such monies at a later date. Meal cards can be obtained from the Program Coordinator or the GME Office.
- Workers’ Compensation. Through the Kansas Self-Insurance Fund, benefits are provided to residents and fellows who are injured performing their job.
- Professional Liability Insurance. Kansas statute KDA 40-3401, ET. Seq. provides professional liability coverage of residents for acts committed while carrying out their responsibilities under the resident agreement.
- Health Insurance. House Staff are eligible for the State of Kansas Employees Group Health Insurance. Coverage begins the first day of the calendar month following 60 days of employment. Premiums are deducted from the paycheck.
- Family Health Insurance. The Kansas Legislature has appropriated funds to pay for dependent health insurance coverage for residents enrolled in the State of Kansas group health insurance program.
